What is Windows Live Writer and How it can be used :

Windows Live Writer is available for download today.

Windows Live Writer is a desktop application that makes it easier to compose compelling blog posts using Windows Live Spaces or your current blog service.

Blogging has turned the web into a two-way communications medium. Our goal in creating Writer is to help make blogging more powerful, intuitive, and fun for everyone.

Writer has lots of features which we hope make for a better blogging experience. Some of the ones we are most excited about include:

WYSIWYG Authoring

Rich Text Editor

The first thing to notice about Writer is that it enables true WYSIWYG blog authoring. You can now author your post and know exactly what it will look like before you publish it. Writer knows the styles of your blog such as headings, fonts, colors, background images, paragraph spacing, margins and block quotes and enables you to edit your post using these styles.

Writer also includes other views including HTML source-code editing and web preview mode.

Now you don’t have to waste time going through the process of publishing, refreshing, previewing, and tweaking your post to get it looking the way you want. It’s all right there in Writer as you create your post.

Photo Publishing

Writer makes inserting, customizing, and uploading photos to your blog a snap. You can insert a photo into your post by browsing image thumbnails through the “Insert Picture” dialog or by copying and pasting from a web page.

Once you’ve inserted the picture, Writer provides contextual editing tools to modify size, text wrapping, borders, and apply graphic effects. Writer also allows you specify a smaller thumbnail to that will link to a larger image for detailed viewing.

Photos can be either uploaded directly to your weblog provider (if they support the newMediaObject API) or to an FTP server.

Map Publishing

Whether you are blogging about a vacation or a political conflict, maps are a great help in engaging the imagination of your readers. You can do this using Writer’s ability to insert a Windows Live Local map directly into a post.

Even better is that the map can be customized directly within Writer – including changing the view to show road, aerial or bird’s eye detail and by adding pushpins (including custom links and/or photos for each pushpin).

When readers click on the map they get a larger view on the Windows Live Local site.

Writer SDK

Already thinking of other cool stuff you want to insert into your blog? Good!

The Windows Live Writer SDK allows developers to extend the capabilities of Writer to publish additional content types. Examples of content types that can be added include:

1. Images from online photo publishing sites
2. Embedded video or audio players
3. Product thumbnails and/or links from e-commerce sites
4. Tags from tagging services

Compatibility

Writer is a great client for Windows Live Spaces but also works with other weblogs including Blogger, LiveJournal, TypePad, WordPress (and many others).

Writer supports RSD (Really Simple Discoverability), the Metaweblog API, and the Movable Type API.

These are instructions on how to unlock and jailbreak your 2.0.x 2G iPhone using WinPwn 2.5 for Windows. They have been updated for iPhone firmware 2.0.2.

To follow this tutorial you will need to have iTunes 7.7 installed (make sure to reboot). Also, you may need to download and install .Net Framework if you are on Windows XP. Finally, make sure you completely uninstall any previous version of WinPwn. Thanks to cmw for all his hard work on this!

Step One
Create a folder on your desktop called Pwnage. In it place Winpwn 2.5 (mirror), 3.9BL , 4.6BL, and the latest 2.0 firmware.

2.0.2 (2G): iPhone1,1_2.0.2_5C1_Restore.ipsw

2.0.2 (3g): iPhone1,2_2.0.2_5C1_Restore.ipsw

Step Two

Install WinPwn by double clicking the downloaded executable. Once WinPwn has been installed it will put a shortcut icon on your desktop. Double click to launch the application.

Step Three

Once WinPwn has opened click the Expert Mode switch to turn Expert Mode ON.

Now click to select the iPhone 2G.

Step Four

You will then be asked to select the firmware you would like to use. Do this then click the green right arrow at the bottom right of the window.

Step Five

You will then be asked if you would like to unlock the iPhone. Most likely you will want to click the green thumbs up button.

Step Six

You will then be asked if you would like to delete BootNeuter after it completes. Most likely you will want to click the green thumbs up button.

Step Seven

WinPwn will now ask if you want to activate your iPhone. If you are not on an official carrier then you will want to click the green thumbs up button.

Step Eight

You will now be asked if you want to install YouTube activation. Again if you are not on an official carrier then you will want to click the green thumbs up button.

Step Nine

You will be asked if you wish to install Cydia. Click the green thumbs up button.

Step Ten

Next you will be asked if you want to install Installer 4. Click the green thumbs up button.

Step Eleven

WinPwn will then ask if you wish to resize the root partition. Click the green thumbs up button.

Step Twelve

If you want to wipe data when doing the restore click the green thumbs up button. Note: this will take longer and I clicked the red thumbs down button.

Step Thirteen

WinPwn will then ask if you would like to use custom boot/recovery images. Click the green thumbs up button if you would like to.

Step Fourteen

You will now be asked to set the size of your root partition. Move the slider to select a partion size of 800mb.

Step Fifteen

You will now be able to select your custom images. Click the iPhone on the left to select your boot logo. Click the iPhone on the right to select your recovery logo.

Click the green arrow button to continue.

Step Sixteen

WinPwn will now ask you to select a location to save the Custom IPSW. Navigate to the Pwnage folder you created on your desktop and click the Save button.

Step Seventeen

WinPwn will now search for your ipsw firmware file. If it cannot find it you will be asked to search manually. Click the green thumbs up button then navigate to the Pwnage folder on your desktop and select the ipsw you downloaded in Step One.

Step Eighteen

WinPwn will now build your custom ipsw.

Step Nineteen

WinPwn will then prompt you to connect your iPhone via USB and make sure its turned off. Do this then click the green thumbs up button.

Step Twenty

WinPwn will then say its ready to start Pwnage. Click the green OK button.

Step Twenty One

Be ready to follow directions now. It will ask you to hold the home button and the power button for 10 seconds. Then, you will have to release the power button and hold the home button for 10 seconds to enter DFU.

Step Twenty Three

Once you iPhone is in DFU mode WinPwn will begin the pwnage process.

You will be informed when pwnage is complete.

Notice your iPhone will show a message saying, “Ready to Restore Custom IPSW”.

Step Twenty Four

iTunes will now prompt you that you are in recovery mode.

Hold down Shift and click the Restore button in iTunes.

A popup window will appear asking you to select your firmware. Select the Custom firmware file we created using WinPwn from the Pwnage folder on your Desktop then click the Open button.

Tab Switches to next opened gtalk window. (same effect with Ctrl+tab and Shift+tab)
Shift + Tab The same thing does that Tab but in reverse.

(The below 4 shortcuts works only for text field in Google talk main window to search contacts. I wonder who uses them? )

Ctrl + Shift + L Switch between points, numbers, letters, capital letters, roman numbers and capital roman numbers
Ctrl + E It centralizes the selected text, or the current line.
Ctrl + R It justifies to the right the selected text, or the current line.
Ctrl + L It justifies to the left the selected text, or the current line.

Chrome is smooth, well refined (as of limited usage I have done) and manages the migration process flawlessly by importing every bit of important data from IE or Firefox. The innovative placement of tab bar, lack of title bar (that’s right, no title bar for Chrome), omnibar (that is what Google calls Chrome’s search-cum-address bar) are all a fresh breath of life in an otherwise plain browser. Did I tell you Chrome follows Firefox shortcuts (mostly)?

I had upgraded to WordPress 2.6.1 today (late, I know), and clicking on the Turbo link did not prompt me for any annoying Gears installer – Gears is built into Chrome.

Currently, there are no extension capabilities to rival those offered by Firefox, and that is one reason why Firefox users will not hurry to Chrome full time. Notice that I say “full-time”, because Chrome makes a very compelling case as a casual browser – lack of extensions notwithstanding.

If Google’s promises of fast Javascript rendering, security, extensions etc. is delivered, Opera, Firefox and several other browsers could have one very interesting competitor to deal with. None of the other browsers have the backing of a company as large as Google (Microsoft and Apple do not count, as one suffers from lack of quality and the other suffers from lack of quantity). Whether Chrome and Firefox would coexist in Google’s future plans also has to be seen.

API support is coming, says Google. APIs will enable developers to write extensions, though the effectiveness of future extensions will have to be seen to be believed. We do have the example of Opera widgets failing completely, now don’t we?
